Dimethylamine Hydrochloride (DMA HCl): A Solid Intermediate for Synthesis

2026-11-07

In procurement, one word can change the whole line item: hydrochloride. Dimethylamine hydrochloride (DMA HCl) and dimethylamine are related, but they are different materials—and a purchase order should not ask the warehouse to guess.
DMA HCl is a salt, not an aqueous DMA grade

Dimethylamine hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt of dimethylamine. Its CAS Registry Number is 506-59-2; free dimethylamine is a different substance with CAS 124-40-3. NIST lists DMA HCl under CAS 506-59-2, while NIOSH identifies dimethylamine separately under CAS 124-40-3.

A salt and its free amine differ in composition and product form, so they should not be substituted on the assumption that “both contain dimethylamine.” Confirm the exact name, CAS number, assay basis and material specification against your process requirement and the supplier’s current COA.

Where the hydrochloride form fits

DMA HCl is used as a chemical reagent or intermediate in synthesis. Supplier references describe it as an intermediate in selected pharmaceutical synthesis routes. That does not make DMA HCl a finished medicine or an active pharmaceutical ingredient. Its role depends on the specific route, downstream product and customer’s qualified process.

A catalog listing can start a technical discussion, but it cannot confirm that a grade suits a regulated or validated process. Buyers should check it against their own specification, quality system and destination requirements.

A useful DMA HCl enquiry checklist

• Confirm identity: use “dimethylamine hydrochloride” and CAS 506-59-2; distinguish it from dimethylamine solution or anhydrous DMA.
• State the assay and basis: include any process-critical impurity or moisture limits, and identify which results must appear on the COA.
• Describe the handling format: request the package type and net weight that fit your receiving and production workflow.
• Align documents: ask for the current product-specific SDS, TDS and representative or batch COA, as applicable.
• Share destination and volume: these details help check availability, packaging and shipping documents before an order is placed.

Specify the salt you need—then verify the grade

China Amines lists dimethylamine hydrochloride among its amine products. For a quotation or technical discussion, share the required assay, key limits, package preference, quantity and destination so the team can check the matching specification and available documents. A clear first enquiry is much cheaper than discovering at receiving that the right family name hid the wrong material.
